When should I plant potatoes in the UK?
The planting time for potatoes in the UK depends on the variety and when you want to harvest. Potatoes are categorised as First Earlies, Second Earlies, and Maincrop.
First Early potatoes are typically planted from late March onwards in milder areas, or early April in colder regions. They mature quickly and are often ready for harvest from late May/early June. Second Earlies are usually planted in April, maturing in July/August. Maincrop varieties, which are for storing and later harvesting, are planted from mid-April to mid-May, ready from August onwards.
It's advisable to chit (sprout) your seed potatoes before planting by placing them in a cool, light, frost-free place for a few weeks; this encourages earlier and larger harvests. Always plant in well-drained, fertile soil in a sunny spot.
