February gardening jobs

For many, February is the month when hope returns to the garden. It may still be cold, damp, and grey, but there are undeniable signs that winter is loosening its grip. Bulbs begin to break through the soil, bringing with them the promise of colour and life. The days are slowly but steadily lengthening - just a few minutes at a time, but enough to notice.

As snowdrops appear and brighten borders and shady corners, take the opportunity to divide established clumps once they've finished flowering. Replanting them 'in the green' is a great way to spread their beauty throughout the garden for future years.

If you didn't cut evergreen hedges last September or October then this can be done now, before birds start nesting.

Ornamental grasses that have been left for winter interest - frosted plumes and golden tufts - can be cut back now to just above ground level, making space for fresh new growth to emerge in the coming weeks.

It?s also time to start sowing some early vegetables. Hardy crops like broad beans, leeks, onions, and salad leaves can be sown under cover, either in a greenhouse, cold frame, or even on a bright windowsill indoors. Keep an eye on temperatures and provide extra protection if needed.

Seed potatoes are now arriving in garden centres and online shops. Once you've chosen your varieties, lay them out in trays or egg boxes with the 'eyes' facing upward and place them in a cool, light, frost-free spot to chit. This encourages sturdy shoots, which will give your crop a strong start once planting time comes in March or April.

Check your compost bins too - if they've been neglected over winter, a quick turn will get them going again. And if you're eager for more early blooms, now's a great time to plant some potted hellebores or primroses for a splash of late winter colour.

Lastly, take time to plan ahead: sketch out planting ideas, browse seed catalogues, and look back at last year's successes and flops. February might still feel like a month of waiting, but beneath the surface, the garden is already stirring.
