How do I propagate an olive tree?

Olive trees are commonly propagated from semi-ripe cuttings taken in late summer.

  • Choose healthy, non-flowering shoots about 10-15cm long.
  • Remove the lower leaves, dip the cut end in rooting hormone, and plant in a well-draining mix of compost and sand or perlite.
  • Place the pot in a propagator or warm, bright location, and keep the medium slightly moist.

Rooting can take 6-10 weeks. Olive trees can also be grown from seed, though this method is slower and less reliable.
