To plant a magnolia tree: choose a sheltered spot with full sun to partial shade and well-drained, acidic to neutral soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper. Gently remove the plant from its container, loosen any circling roots. Place the tree so the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface. Backfill with a mix of excavated soil and well-rotted organic matter. Water thoroughly, and apply a good layer of mulch around the base, keeping it away from the trunk. Stake if necessary for the first year or two.
