How do I prevent magnolia flower bud damage from frost?

Early flowering deciduous magnolias are prone to having their magnificent blooms damaged by late spring frosts. To minimise this, plant them in a sheltered spot away from strong winds and morning sun (which can thaw frozen buds too quickly). Avoid planting in frost pockets. If a late frost is predicted, you can temporarily cover small trees or branches with horticultural fleece or hessian overnight to provide some insulation. Ensuring the tree is well-hydrated before a frost can also help.
