Magnolias can be susceptible to honey fungus (Armillaria spp.), particularly if they are stressed, planted in poor soil, or in an area where honey fungus has been present on previous trees. Symptoms include white fungal sheets under the bark near the base, black rhizomorphs (bootlaces) spreading through the soil, and a general decline in the tree's health. There is no chemical cure; removal of infected wood and creation of physical barriers in the soil are the main strategies for management. Planting resistant species is a long-term preventative measure.
