The optimal time to thin apples is during the early stages of fruit development, generally 2 to 6 weeks after full bloom, depending on your climate and apple variety. At this point, the young apples are about the size of a marble (quarter to half inch in diameter). Early thinning is most effective because it allows the tree to redirect nutrients and energy toward fewer, higher-quality fruits. Waiting too long reduces these benefits and can result in less effective size improvement and less influence on preventing biennial bearing.
