Most apple varieties benefit from thinning, but the degree to which they need it can vary. Some varieties, such as 'Fuji', 'Honeycrisp', and 'Gala', are known for heavy fruit set and typically require aggressive thinning. Others, like 'Gravenstein' or 'Spartan', may thin themselves naturally to some extent or produce more moderate crops. Additionally, environmental conditions, tree health, and age play a role. While natural fruit drop (called 'June drop') can help, it usually doesn't go far enough to meet thinning goals, so manual intervention is still recommended in most cases for optimal results.
