Magnolias, especially those with large, delicate flowers or broad leaves (like M. grandiflora), can be vulnerable to strong winds, which can damage blooms and branches. Plant them in a sheltered location, ideally against a wall or fence, or amongst other large shrubs or trees that can provide a windbreak. For young trees, use sturdy, low-level staking for the first few years to help them establish a strong root system and prevent rocking, which can damage the roots.
