Cotswolds Garden - FAQs
Frequently asked gardening related questions
The best type of mulch for magnolias is an organic, acidic or neutral material. Well-rotted garden compost, leaf mould, or pine bark chippings are excellent choices. Apply a 5-10 cm (2-4 inch) layer around the base of the tree, extending out to the drip line, but keep it a few inches away from the trunk to prevent rot. Mulching helps to suppress weeds, retain soil moisture, regulate soil temperature, and slowly releases nutrients as it decomposes, benefiting the magnolia's shallow root system.
