Cotswolds Garden - FAQs
Frequently asked gardening related questions
Magnolias can tolerate clay soil, but it must be well-drained. Heavy, compacted clay that remains waterlogged will lead to root rot and poor growth. To improve clay soil for magnolias, incorporate significant amounts of organic matter (compost, well-rotted manure, leaf mould) and coarse grit or sharp sand into the planting hole and surrounding area. This will improve aeration and drainage, making the soil more hospitable for their fleshy roots. Creating a slightly raised planting mound can also help in very heavy clay.
