Suckers are shoots that emerge from the base of the main trunk or from the rootstock below the graft union. They should be removed promptly, as they can compete with the main plant for resources and, if from the rootstock, will produce different, often inferior, flowers or foliage. To remove suckers, trace them back to their point of origin and cleanly cut them off flush with the main stem or root, using sharp, sterilised secateurs. Regular inspection is key to catching them early.
