Magnolias have a relatively shallow, fleshy, and somewhat brittle root system. Unlike trees with fibrous roots, their roots are thick and can be easily damaged during transplanting. They tend to spread out widely rather than deeply, especially in heavy soils. This is why good drainage is crucial, as their roots are sensitive to waterlogging. It also means they can be susceptible to drought if not adequately watered, particularly when young. Avoid cultivating directly over their root zone to prevent damage.
