Do magnolias have invasive roots?

Magnolias are generally not considered to have aggressive or invasive root systems in the way that some other large trees do (e.g., poplars or willows). Their roots are fleshy and tend to spread outwards rather than deeply, primarily within the top layers of the soil. While they can extend widely, they are unlikely to cause damage to well-constructed foundations unless planted very close to the structure, especially on shrinkable clay soils. It's still wise to give them ample space away from buildings and drainage systems.
