What's the difference between clumping and running bamboo?

The key difference lies in the growth of the root system. Clumping bamboo (sympodial) has short rhizomes that grow upward in tight groups, forming compact, non-invasive clumps. These are slow to spread and easier to manage, making them ideal for smaller gardens or urban plots.

Running bamboo (monopodial), in contrast, has long, horizontally-growing rhizomes that spread aggressively underground. New shoots may emerge metres away from the parent plant unless a root barrier or regular pruning is in place. The choice between the two should be based on available space, how much maintenance you're willing to commit to, and whether containment is practical.

Summary: Clumping bamboo stays compact and manageable, while running bamboo spreads quickly and needs containment.
