As a general rule, it's recommended to plant a magnolia at least half of its mature spread away from a house or other building foundation. For smaller varieties like Magnolia stellata, 2-3 metres (6-10 feet) might suffice. For larger species like Magnolia soulangiana or Magnolia grandiflora, which can become substantial trees, a distance of 5-10 metres (15-30 feet) or more is advisable. This allows for adequate root development, prevents interference with foundations, and ensures the tree has enough space to develop its natural form without crowding.
