Swales are uncompacted ditches dug on contour (level across a slope) with a mound of excavated earth (berm) on the downhill side. Their primary purpose in permaculture is to slow, spread, and sink rainwater runoff. The ditch catches water, allowing it to infiltrate slowly into the ground, recharging groundwater and nourishing plants along the berm (often planted with trees or shrubs). They are highly effective for water conservation and preventing erosion on slopes.
