Growing magnolias in coastal areas of the UK can be challenging due to exposure to strong, salt-laden winds. While some species may tolerate it better than others, the delicate flowers of many deciduous magnolias can be easily damaged, and foliage of evergreens can suffer from salt burn and desiccation. If attempting to grow in a coastal garden, choose a very sheltered spot, ideally behind a robust windbreak, and select more tolerant varieties.
