Growing magnolias in highly chalky (alkaline) soil is challenging and generally not recommended. Chalky soils have a high pH (above 7.0-7.5), which binds up essential nutrients like iron, making them unavailable to the magnolia. This often leads to chlorosis (yellowing leaves with green veins) and stunted growth. If your soil is very chalky, your best option is to grow magnolias in large containers using a dedicated ericaceous compost, or create a significantly raised bed amended with large amounts of acidic organic matter to counteract the alkalinity.
