For example, a typical combination might include a layer of grass clippings (greens), followed by a layer of leaves or shredded cardboard (browns). You can adjust the ratio by adding more of one material depending on the condition of your pile. If your pile is too wet and smelly, add more browns; if it's too dry and slow to decompose, add more greens.
