What is zone planning in permaculture?

Zone planning is a permaculture design tool that organises elements in a landscape based on the frequency of human interaction and the intensity of management required. Zone 0 is the home/building. Zone 1 (most frequently visited) includes herbs, salad crops, and highly managed annuals. Zones extend outwards to Zone 5 (wild/unmanaged areas). Placing elements in appropriate zones minimises energy expenditure and maximises efficiency in a design.
