Roses prefer loamy, fertile soil with a slightly acidic pH between 6.0 and 6.5. Before planting, enrich your soil by mixing in well-rotted compost or aged manure. If the soil is heavy clay or sandy, amend it with organic matter to improve its texture and nutrient content. A deep, loose planting hole (about 18 inches wide and 18 inches deep) allows roots to spread easily and establishes a strong foundation.
