Why are my magnolia buds turning brown and not opening?

If your magnolia buds are turning brown and failing to open, the most common culprit in the UK is late spring frost. Early-flowering deciduous magnolias develop their flower buds in autumn and these are highly susceptible to damage by a sudden dip in temperature once they begin to swell in spring. Other less common reasons could include severe drought stress during bud formation in the previous year, or fungal issues, though frost is by far the most frequent cause.
