Rose midge (Dasineura rhodophaga) is a tiny, mosquito-like fly whose larvae feed on new rose growth, causing the tips of shoots and flower buds to blacken, distort, and die. It can be very damaging, especially to repeat-flowering roses. Control is challenging: remove and destroy affected tips promptly. Maintain very good garden hygiene by regularly clearing debris. Encourage predatory insects. Soil drenching with certain nematodes or insecticides may be considered in severe cases, but prevention through vigilance is key.
