Is dethatching necessary for lawns, and how is it done?

Thatch is a layer of dead grass and organic material that can build up on lawns, particularly in damp or shaded areas, which are common in the UK. A small amount is normal, but if it exceeds 1.5 cm, it can block water and nutrients. Scarifying (UK term for dethatching) is best done in autumn or spring, using a spring-tine rake for small areas or a scarifier for larger lawns. After scarifying, reseed bare spots and feed the lawn to promote recovery. Avoid scarifying in summer or during drought, as it can stress the grass further.
